On 27th August 2024, the construction of the Tano Bridge on the Ntotroso-Acherensua Highways commenced. This significant infrastructure project is aimed at improving road connectivity between the towns of Ntotroso and Acherensua in the Asutifi North District. The Tano River has historically posed challenges for commuters due to the inadequacy of the previous crossing, which was often impassable during the rainy season. The construction of this new bridge marks a critical step in improving transport links in the region.
The Ntotroso-Acherensua corridor is an important roadway that serves as a vital route for residents, farmers, traders, and businesses in the area. However, the lack of a sturdy and reliable bridge over the Tano River had resulted in:
- Transport Disruptions: During the rainy season, the river often overflowed, making it difficult for vehicles and pedestrians to cross safely. This led to delays in the transportation of goods and services.
- Economic Impact: Farmers and traders, particularly those transporting agricultural products to nearby markets, faced challenges in getting their goods to market on time, which negatively impacted the local economy.
- Safety Concerns: The previous crossing was not only inadequate but also dangerous, especially for school children, residents, and businesses who had to cross the river daily.
The bridge is being constructed using reinforced concrete and modern engineering techniques to ensure its durability and resilience against heavy rainfall and flooding, the bridge will be wide enough to accommodate two lanes of traffic, allowing for the smooth and safe passage of vehicles in both directions. This will ease traffic congestion and allow for efficient movement of goods, The bridge will also include pedestrian walkways to ensure the safety of people walking across, reducing the risk of accidents
The construction of the Tano Bridge on the Ntotroso-Acherensua Highways is a crucial infrastructure project that promises to transform transportation and economic activity in the region. The Ahafo Regional Minister and local authorities have expressed their commitment to ensuring that the project is completed on time and within budget, while also meeting the needs of the local population. As the project progresses, the bridge is expected to play a vital role in fostering economic growth, improving safety, and enhancing connectivity in the area.
