The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) commissioned a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kenyase, located in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region, on November 29, 2024. This facility, along with another in Sankore, was funded by Newmont Ghana at GHS 10.7 million. The bases aim to enhance emergency response times and address rising security challenges in the region.
Before establishing these FOBs, security services and residents depended on military support from Sunyani in the neighbouring Bono Region, which often led to delayed responses during crises. The new bases are strategically positioned to facilitate quicker deployments, ensuring better protection for communities and businesses within the Ahafo Region.
The construction of the bases also generated employment for over 200 local residents, many of whom were hired through local contractors. This strengthened local businesses and contributed to the area’s economic and social development.
At the handover ceremony, Alex Kofi Annin, General Manager of Newmont’s Ahafo South Mine, emphasized that the absence of established military bases in the Ahafo Region had previously posed challenges, necessitating reliance on military contingents stationed elsewhere. He stated that by funding the construction of these bases in Kenyase and Sankore, Newmont is committed to ensuring safer communities.
Military commanders, regional leaders, and traditional authorities attended the commissioning ceremony in Kenyase. They expressed optimism about the role the facilities will play in ensuring safety and peace in the region. The Ghana Armed Forces are now better equipped to respond promptly to emergencies and deter criminal activities, fostering a sense of security for residents.
